Description

100 Dowels is more than enough to treat 2 logs, 15cm in diameter by 1 Meter in length. Specifications below.

These birch spiral groove dowels have Shiitake mushroom mycelium growing through them.
By a process of drilling, knocking in dowels and sealing the log with wax, the Shiitake mushroom is introduced to the tree log.
Fresh tree logs, no more than a month old, with bark still intact should be used.
Suitable logs come from a wide variety of hardwood tree species. Soft wood species are not suitable (pine, coniferous species). A list of tested tree species are below.
When weather conditions are right and proper care is taken of the logs, shiitake mushrooms will appear to grow out of the log, in 6 months to 2 years after inoculation.

Logs should be more than 10cm in diameter and about 1 meter in length.
Too small and the log will dry out too quickly. Too large and the log will be too heavy to handle.
The holes should be drilled in a diamond pattern. Each row should be 5cm apart and each dowel should be at a 15cm spacing per row.
Leave a 5 cm space between the dowel and the ends of  log.
